Honeymoon Fight That Went Little Too Far
23 APRIL 2017
You might have heard of
honeymoon couples fighting on their first night. But, have you heard it happened to a couple who traveled 3000 miles to celebrate it in the Maldives? After 9 long years since the incident it still bothers me. May be because I did not know the exact reason that caused such a fierce fight. They spoke Chinese and none of them clearly explained the actual reason.
It was 2008 and I was working in one of the most popular resorts in
Ari Atoll. One day the receptionist on duty called me to tell there was a fight in one of the water villas. I was not far from that villa and immediately rushed to the scene. Before I could knock on the door it opened and girl came out running. Her hands were bleeding. Inside stood the gentleman with bleeding head. On the floor were shattered glass. Despite an escalated fight the couple seemed to be calm. I did not know how long it had been after the incident. It looked like it had been a while.
Since the situation was calm I offered both to go clinic for treatment. Lady refused to go with the gentleman. He got a head injury and pieces of glass were still on his head, his injury looked serious. Having the lady refused go in the same buggy with the gentleman, I had to take one by one. Both got treated for the wounds, none of them turned to a severe condition.
Pieces of broken glass on the floor came from the water goblets kept in the room. The gentleman said the lady took the goblet and hit his head. In the process cut her hands too. He said there was an argument and the lady hit him. He did not tell the exact reason. Neither of them wanted to call police.
After the incident the lady refused to stay in the same room as the gentleman, she refused even to be seen to him. He was desperately looking for her. To prevent another physically confrontation the management decided to provide her another room as she requested. Her room number was kept secret and the gentleman kept looking for her, asking staff about her whereabouts. It was a big resort with several restaurants, the lady managed to take meals at different outlets and yet remain out of sight from the gentleman.
Few days later honeymoon was over. It was time for their departure. Since lady had the gentleman’s credit card payment was not a problem. But, she expressed her concerns about the safety and refused to fly with him. Luckily there was another seaplane at almost the same time. So, we put both to separate seaplanes and said good bye.
What bothered me most was that it was the gentleman who had more injuries and yet he was seeking the lady. The gentleman said the lady struck his head with the water goblet which was found shattered on the floor. Lady suffered far less injuries and yet claimed she was afraid of the gentlemen. She said he hit her first. But, there were no injuries visible other than what seemed to be cuts from holding the water goblet. Anyway, both left in separate seaplanes. I was asked her what she would do for the international flight. She gestured that she might buy a ticket from another flight.
Several years after the incident I still wonder what was the actual reason, and what would be their current relationship status. Would my memories of the bizarre incident reach her? Would she write to me to explain what really went wrong? Sometime back I wrote about
the missing couple who spent 17 hours in the sea. They saw the story shared by their friends and wrote back explaining how it happened. About this honeymoon incident I am yet to find out.
