The Art Of Catching Tuna
Did I say art? Yes, how the Maldivian fishermen do pole-and-line is a unique art practiced from the ancient history. Fishermen are active people who wake up early morning, load the boat with bait fish and head to open ocean. Fishermen look for hungry schools. Once reached, bait is thrown and water sprayed over the bait fish. Fishermen line up on the edge and throw the catch over their heads, one by one. Maldivian fishermen use a different type of hook, with right movement on pole fish gets unhooked automatically.
It takes long time to collect bait fish and meet a hungry school. Once in it there is not turning back and a high spirit keep them on the go. It only takes a short while to fill the whole boat, depending on how hungry the fish were. It is unusual to spend hours in the catch-heat.
