Maldives Issue Weather Alert, 8 Inches Rise In Sea Level Could Flood Some Islands
26 Sep 2015: Authorities have issued weather alert in the Maldives today. A message sent by the Ministry of Tourism states the possibility of sea level rise up to 8 inches over the next 4 days. The rare supermoon or ‘blood moon’ is to happen on 28th in the Maldives and moon becoming closer to earth is expected to cause changes in tide level.
The message sent to resorts by Ministry of Tourism said “A rise of sea level 6-8 inches, average wave height of 3-6 feet is forecasted from Sep 27th to 30th 2015 as a result of super moon, increasing the possibility of high tidal waves. We advise measure to protect infrastructure, equipments and machinery. We also recommend to keep guests informed.”
Maldives Meteorological Service said the high tide occurs between 11:30hrs and 15:50hrs in the day time and 00:00hrs till 03:30hrs at night. The national weather agency asks people to be cautious.
This is first time moon becoming so close to earth in the last 30 years, this is causing weather worse at already present bad weather.
As a tourist what should you do? Maldives Finest suggest the following
1. Do not privately snorkel during the high tide hours. Resorts may organize snorkeling trips to take you to safer and calm areas of the sea, so join such trips should you really want to go sea during these hours.
2. Do not keep your baggage on the floor, keep it on luggage rack in case it gets flooded.
3. Do not panic, there is no immediate threat to life, just follow safety precautions.
What do we suggest to resorts?
1. Keep guests informed.
2. Monitor conditions at the beach.
3. Brief security officers and emergency personnel.
4. Keep a boat ready for emergency assistance if required.
5. Check first-aid boxes and keep proper stock.
6. Keep some sand bags ready to protect vital area such as power house.
7. Monitor boats on anchor or at dock.
8. Do not panic or over-react, it is not a tsunami.
