Under a global voluntary awareness programme the Peace Boat left Yokohama Japan on 22 November 2014. Among the 950 volunteers aboard were a Maldivian named Ahmed Khaleel who was the High Commissioner of Maldives to Japan. He joined Peace Boat from Singapore port on 1st December.

Khaleel started his job at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maldives in 1982 and this remarkable event was of a special pride in his long career. In his trip he met volunteers from many different countries and among them were many Japanese, the same country where he was based. Although Maldives is widely known through the world, there were many people who didn’t know much. Khaleel took this opportunity to introduce Maldives and gave information to them in the boat's lecture hall. Khaleel said that Japanese people loved Maldives, but some people actually didn’t know Maldives.

In his lectures Khaleel highlighted the tourism industry, environment, economy and most important the environmental aspects. The lecture hall was packed with people who had their attention on Khaleel. Knowing a country that was so different from the rest of the world might have drawn attention of the audience. Khaleel was proud of his efforts.

This trip by the High Commissioner is remarkable as no other high profile Maldivian is known to have taken part any trip by sea in the recent years.

Khaleel is thankful for the hospitality rendered to him during this voyage. Restaurants onboard served Japanese dishes while Khaleel and other volunteers shared their experience.

Peace Boat reached Maldives on Saturday. It was a great happiness and joy for Khaleel, who is currently staying in Male'. Khaleel was one of the passengers of Peace Boat which crossed huge oceans on the mission of Peaceful World. He was one of the high profile volunteers aboard and his participation deemed as an encouragement for the whole group.

After arriving to Maldives, Peace Boat has already set sail to Mauritius. It will go Europe and Africa before returning to Japan on March 6th 2014. One of the memorable destinations for the participants would definitely be the Maldives. The volunteers visited some of the islands and enjoyed white beaches during the strip.
