Maldives About To Kill An Endangered Animal
Police raided a house in the Maldives capital on suspected drug deals 2 months back and found a Slow Loris caged and kept in a hidden storage room. It is believed the non-native animal was smuggled into Maldives. Police took the animal with them and is taken care at Dhoonidhoo, a jail island near the capital Male'.
Slow Loris found smuggled into Maldives
Maldives do not have a zoo or animal rescue centre. The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is dealing with the endangered animal. The agency has tried to send this animal abroad but many countries, including European Union, have refused to accept smuggled animal, mainly due to legal issues.
The Environment Protection Agency now says that failure to extradite the animal would leave them with no option but to kill under best international practices.
Slow Loris is a human friendly species, easy to adapt as pet. We have heard this animal at Dhoonidhoo enjoys rice balls and many human food.
